Warts that appear, once the virus has invaded a body, are tough, round in shape, and can be white or yellow in color. This condition can cause serious pain if warts appear on a sensitive area. At this point, it is important to know that the warts verruca caused by human papillomavirus are not the same as genital warts.

The Prevention

Verrucae can cause a lot of pain and discomfort to an infected person. In some cases, this condition can also cause the patient to develop a limp. Human papillomavirus commonly spreads by skin-to-skin contact. The Treatment

In some cases, the infection can go away on its own but it can also persist on a long-term basis if left unsupervised. Unless the warts are causing you pain, there is no need to treat them. But if the condition is causing you discomfort during your day-to-day activities then you can opt for one of the following wart treatments.

1. Salicylic acid: Salicylic Acid can be found in a number of lotions and special plasters. It comes as a paint or a gel that burns off the top layer of the wart. The results come in slowly and the application of the gel has to be continued for 3 months to completely treat the condition. This treatment can fail or the warts can come back if the patient gives up too early.

2. Cryotherapy or Freezing Treatment: Cryotherapy or Freezing the warts can be a good treatment. This treatment can be received from podiatrists, general physicians, and nurses. Liquid nitrogen is used in this procedure for freezing and destroying the wart tissue. 

It usually takes up to 6 sessions for the complete removal of verruca. However, this treatment can be a bit painful and cause blisters on the skin surrounding warts. It is also more expensive as compared to the usage of Salicylic Acid.

3. Verruca Needling: This treatment requires the puncturing of the verruca layer with the help of a sterilized needle. The idea behind this treatment is to stimulate a response by the body to kill the viruses in the infected area. The needling process causes bleeding but the procedure is carried out under local anesthesia and the patients do not feel any pain. It is important not to take anti-inflammatory painkillers after the procedure as they can halt the body’s immune response for killing the viruses. This procedure is mainly used for verrucas that are really tough.

4. Swift Microwave Therapy: This directs microwave energy with the help of a probe to heat up and destroy the infected verruca tissue. Depending on the depth of the verruca tissue, one or more sessions can help cure the infection. This process does not cause inflammation or damage to blood vessels and is considered one of the most effective treatments for removing warts.

5. Cantharidin: This treatment is a formulated substance that can be oily or a colloidal film, that is applied directly on the wart by a trained podiatrist. The podiatrist will let the cantharidin dry before sealing it with a water resistance bandage for 4-6 hours. After the removal of the bandage, wash the area with soap and water. It is normal for a blister to form in the next 24-48 hours. In a few days, the blister will dry up and fall off. In severe cases, local anesthesia may be required. Otherwise, healing begins within a week.

6. Laser Treatment: Laser treatment works best for large warts that have grown internally. Local anesthesia may be applied to the area prior to treatment. The laser pinpoints the blood vessels inside the wart which prevents damage to other tissues. The laser directs rapid pulses to heat the capillaries that connects the wart. This seals the blood vessel and kills the wart’s tissues. Warts are eliminated with one to five laser sessions depending on the severity of the wart.

If you are experiencing significant foot or heel pain that travels up to your legs all the way to your back, chances are that you are suffering from foot deformities or abnormalities that are causing foot imbalance and misalignment.

The treatment for your foot pain would have to be based on proper diagnosis done by a podiatrist. If it has been found that you need extra support for your feet, you are likely to be prescribed a pair custom inserts or over the counter shoe insoles.

You have the option to use custom orthotics or off-the-shelf variety. Logically, it would seem like custom shoe inserts would be the better choice between the two, but other factors come into play including cost, durability, accessibility, effectiveness, and severity of your foot pain. So before you make a decision on which type of shoe inserts to treat your foot pain, you should understand the difference between the two options and determine if custom shoe inserts are indeed better than over the counter inserts.

What’s the difference between foot orthotics and shoe inserts?

Foot orthotics are prescribed custom-made medical devices that are worn inside the shoes to correct any biomechanical foot problems relating to how you move, walk, or run. They are also used by your podiatrist as part of a comprehensive foot care plan to alleviate pain caused by chronic diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, and plantar fasciitis. Because over the counter shoe inserts are mass-produced, they are designed to fit into shoes but they are not tailor-made for your feet. Although shoe inserts are effective in reducing the stress for heel pain, they are not specifically designed to correct foot problems.

Custom Inserts

Custom-made orthotic shoe inserts are specifically designed for your feet. Your podiatrist takes into account the shape, size, contours, and arch of your feet so that the insert is customized not only to give the proper support you need but also to address any foot pain that you may be experiencing.   

Typically, your podiatrist will examine how you walk to determine how your feet and ankles are positioned when you move around. Based on the findings, he will prescribe an individualized corrective shoe insert that will then be manufactured in an orthotic laboratory.

They will create a mold of your foot using a 3D scanner. The scanner will capture the contours and arch of your foot which will enable them to create a shell that perfectly fits into your arch. It can be adjusted and modified to fit specific corrective requirements.

Different materials are used in designing shoe inserts including plastic, carbon fiber, or foam, among other things. It would depend on what the problem is and what type of shoe is used.  Different shoes require different fittings, which means you may benefit from multiple pairs depending on the shoe type you wear for specific activities.  This will allow for the best fit for your dress shoes, boots, sneakers, or high heels. Because the inserts have to follow very specific requirements, the process takes about 4 weeks for production. They will also be more expensive than store-bought inserts.

Custom shoe inserts are not just about providing cushion to give you a more comfortable feeling when you walk or run; they are used to treat foot abnormalities, keep your ankles and legs aligned, and make you less susceptible to ankle sprains, shin splints, and other injuries. Because the inserts are custom-made to correct the biomechanical faults of your feet, they support your feet and body.

By using custom shoe inserts, the wear and tear from daily activities is greatly reduced and the damage to your feet is minimized. In most cases, the foot pain is eliminated thus bringing back the normal functioning of the feet.

Over the Counter Shoe Inserts

Over-the-counter shoe inserts are the generic shell shape or arch shape insoles you find in stores. The way to find the right size is to match it to the size of your shoes and then you have to trim it to the desired fit.

Even if you think that it fits well, it will not fit the arch of your foot as well as a custom insert. But even if the inserts don’t fit like they should, they still provide sufficient heel support and cushion to provide some foot pain relief. You’d be comfortable walking in them and may alleviate the pain caused by your foot issues.

Some store-bought shoe insert manufacturers are upping their game and offering some kind of off-the-shelf custom-made hybrid shoe insert. Using a special scanner, sensors on a pressure mat map your pressure points. Then a recommendation for a shoe insert is made using the data from the pressure map.  

Clearly, it is not as precise as a 3D scan but it does accurately determine if you have a high or low arch. Even though it does map your pressure points, it still does not compare to a custom-made shoe insert.  

You’ll also notice that some of the inserts you find in stores are semi-custom fit wherein you can mold the insert yourself by applying heat or dipping in hot water to shape them into the desired fit. A good over the counter shoe insert will give enough cushion and support to reduce the pressure on your feet but it’s not likely to correct any biomechanical faults.

Are Custom Inserts More Effective than Over the Counter?

Custom shoe inserts that are produced from an analysis and examination of your feet and how you walk by your podiatrist will provide better results compared to a generic over the counter shoe insert. This is because custom inserts address the foot problem instead of just reducing pain and managing symptoms.

That’s not to say over the counter shoe inserts are useless. There are several causes for ingrown toenails.

  1. Warm water. Soak your feet in warm water for 15-20 minutes, 3 to 4 times per day. Soaking your feet in warm water can help reduce the pain and swelling of the feet. 
  2. Wear well-fitted shoes and socks. Shoe fit is considered the cause for an ingrown toenail. Always try to use the appropriate size of shoes and socks to mitigate any nail damage resulting in an ingrown toenail. 
  3. Use an over the counter pain reliever. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may help with pain relief for your ingrown toenail.

  1. Calf Stretching
    Often the first steps in the morning can be excruciating. Those first few steps can perpetuate a cycle of inflammation and pain. You can break this vicious cycle by stretching your calf before getting out of bed. To stretch your calf muscles, take a towel and loop it around the ball of your foot. Keep your leg straight and pull your feet towards your body until you feel a stretch in the lower part of your leg and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 5 times before taking your first step out of bed.
  2. Plantar Fascia Stretching
    Stretching the inflamed plantar fascia is not as tricky as it sounds with this proven method. Pull your toes up to your body with your hand until you feel stretching along the ball of your foot. Repeat 3 times. Holding this position for 30 seconds can decrease your pain dramatically.
  3. Massage
    Who says that a massage must be expensive!? Look no further than a tennis ball. Place a tennis ball on the ground and roll your foot on it for a few minutes to help loosen your plantar fascia to break the vicious cycle of inflammation and pain. Don’t be scared to put some pressure on it. You may feel some soreness, but decrease the pressure if you feel any pain.
  4. Ice Massage
    Icing can also be effective to help control inflammation. Freeze a water bottle and roll it under your foot for 10 minutes at the end of the day. It’s not the most comfortable thing in the world, but keep at it if you can tolerate it.


These tips have been proven to work, however, they won’t work overnight. Much like building muscle, it can take a couple of weeks before you notice an appreciable decrease in pain levels. If after 3-4 weeks of consistent effort with no change in pain, it’s time to consider some different treatment methods with our doctors such oral or topical anti-inflammatories, ultrasound therapy, physical therapy, and custom made orthotics to name a few.

We often take for granted our feet and shoes and forget that many people can’t afford a good pair of shoes. But GOOD shoes make a BIG difference! There is a need for children in Katy, Tx and worldwide who are living in poverty and don’t have a new pair of shoes to start the school year. Lack of good footwear puts children at a higher risk for foot-related injuries and contracting life-threatening diseases because they have to walk barefoot. Here at home and around the world, shoes are required for school which affects children living in poverty and can’t afford shoes. Giving vulnerable children a new pair of shoes can provide better health, education, and a tangible expression of love and hope.
